The River Carried Me

Week 65 — Ending July 20, 2026

Symbols: Sun · Mountain · River · Tree · Story
Threshold: From enduring the weather → trusting the foundation beneath it
Key phrase: I am my own fucking tree.

This was a week so dense that Monday felt like another lifetime by the time Sunday arrived.

Perhaps that is the nature of this season.

Each morning seems to uncover another layer. Another challenge. Another emotion. Another opportunity to use what I know—not to discover some entirely new version of myself, but to embody the woman I have already become.

Some days hurt.
Some days are filled with ridiculous amounts of joy.
Some days I lead.
Some days I grieve.
Some days I simply do my best to make it through.

But beneath every day, something has changed:

I no longer have to wonder whether I can meet my life.

I know who will meet it.

Me.

✦ I Forgot There Was Any Other Way

This week began with a realization born in a room full of strangers.

I went alone to a beautiful wine dinner, surrounded mostly by couples.

There was a time when I would have noticed every glance.

I would have wondered what people thought of the woman sitting alone. I would have monitored myself from outside myself, measuring whether I belonged.

Instead, something remarkable happened.

I forgot to be self-conscious.

I was too busy enjoying my own life to watch myself living it.

Standing among couples, I realized that many people might never do what I was doing—not because they couldn’t, but because being alone in a room like that might feel too uncomfortable.

And there I was.

Not proving my independence. Not performing confidence. Not making a statement.

Just living.

For years, one of the deepest lines of my story has been:

She kept going anyway.

She kept going through betrayal.
Through heartbreak.
Through fear.
Through uncertainty.

Through all the moments when she doubted herself and walked forward anyway.

But the sentence has changed.

Now:

She kept going because she forgot there was any other way.

Not because life stopped being difficult.

Because she stopped questioning whether she belonged inside her own life.

✦ When Strength Becomes Camouflage

Then the weather changed. Grief came roaring back.

I found myself surrounded by people who love me, people who know what is happening with Patty, while somewhere inside I wanted to crumble.

And nobody noticed.

Because I looked fine.

I have become extraordinarily good at looking fine.

Strong.
Independent.
Capable.
Funny.
Functional.
The woman who handles things.

And I realized that strength can become camouflage.

People see the exterior and believe it.

Sometimes they are afraid to ask because they don’t want to trigger the pain.
Sometimes it is easier not to ask.
And sometimes I make it nearly impossible to see how much I am carrying.

That night taught me something important:

I cannot keep pretending.
I don’t have to collapse publicly.
I don’t have to give everyone access to my grief.
But I can no longer spend precious capacity performing okay when I am not okay.

And another truth returned with even greater clarity:

My boundaries must be stronger than my empathy.

I can understand someone’s pain without carrying it.
I can love without rescuing.
Witness without absorbing.
Lead without becoming responsible for everyone else’s emotional landscape.

I can carry my part.
And only my part.

This is not less love.

It is Energetic Stewardship made real.

✦ I Set Down Grief and Picked Up Joy

And then I did something equally important.

I consciously set the grief down.

Not forever. Not because it disappeared. Not because Patty’s dying became less true.

I simply decided that grief did not get to occupy every room inside me.

For a couple of days:

I picked up joy.
I laughed.
I played.
I spent time with people I love.

I packed so much life into my birthday weeks that by Sunday night I had absolutely nothing left for a weekly check-in.

For good reason.

I was exhausted from having too much fucking fun.

And there is healing in that too.

Joy did not betray grief.
Grief did not invalidate joy.

Both were true.

I am learning that emotional integrity does not mean remaining loyal to one feeling simply because it is the heaviest one.

Sometimes integrity means grieving completely.

Sometimes it means saying:

Not today. Today I am going to live.

✦ The River

And then, on Sunday, I entered a literal river.

For three hours, I floated with a friend beneath the sun.

The weather was perfect. The water was perfect. Nature moved slowly past as the current carried us toward somewhere we had not yet reached.

I did not have to make the river move.
I did not have to know every bend.
I did not have to lead it.
I chose where to enter.
And then I allowed myself to be carried.

After weeks of decisions, responsibility, leadership, grief, celebration, boundaries, revelations and becoming—I floated.

And the river carried me to the next destination. Literally. And figuratively.

There is a lesson here I want to remember:

Being carried is not the opposite of agency.

I chose the river.

I entered willingly.

Then I trusted the current.

✦ The Forgotten Sigil

The next morning, I opened my tablet to begin this check-in.

By accident, I opened Infinite Painter.

And there it was.

A sigil I had begun days earlier and forgotten.

A single symbol born from four guides that have accompanied me through this season:

Sun. Mountain. River. Tree.

I tightened the lines.

And suddenly I could see what I had drawn.

Not four separate symbols.

A system.

A map.

A way of moving through whatever comes next.

Sun — Truth.
I know what is true.

Mountain — Wisdom.
I rise high enough to see the larger terrain.

River — Trust.
I allow movement without demanding control.

Tree — Identity.
Through every landscape, I remain myself.

The four belong together.

Truth gives direction.

Wisdom gives perspective.

Trust allows movement.

Identity gives continuity.

And somehow, without planning it, I had drawn the river before I floated it.

Then I lived the symbol.

Then I rediscovered the map.

✦ The Tree Does Not Need Consistent Weather

Perhaps this is the deepest truth of Week 65.

The weather above ground is wildly unpredictable right now.

One day brings grief.
Another brings responsibility.
Another brings laughter.
Another brings exhaustion.
Another brings something I could never have predicted when I woke that morning.

Each week contains a month.

Each day seems to ask something new of me.

But the tree does not need consistent weather to know it is a tree.

Its identity is rooted beneath the weather.

That is where I am now.

For so long, growth meant excavation.

Something happened.
I searched beneath it.
Found the wound.
Named the pattern.
Discovered a truth.
Integrated another piece.
Changed.

Now something different is happening.

Life presents something new—and increasingly, I already know how to be myself inside it.

I don’t need to consult the Purple Codex.

I live it.

Radical Integrity tells the truth.

Coherent Discernment knows what belongs to me.

Energetic Stewardship protects my capacity.

Self-Directed Agency chooses.

Mutual Sovereignty releases what belongs to others.

Embodied Aliveness says yes to the fucking river.

Intentional Evolution allows every experience to expand me.

Interconnected Consciousness remembers that I am part of something larger without surrendering myself to it.

The Codex has moved from aspiration—

to embodiment—

to reflex.

✦ The Clearing

Now I look at the next two weeks.

After birthday dinners and Bingo and gatherings and celebrations and grief and work and wine and friends and rivers and everything else—the calendar is quiet.

There is space.

And my first feeling is not: What should I put there?

It is: I can breathe again.

Perhaps the clearing does not need to become another project.

Perhaps nothing needs to fill it.

Perhaps this is integration.

The mountain does not need to be climbed every day.
The river does not need to be directed.
The sun does not need to explain itself.
The tree does not need to prove that it has roots.

Sometimes I can simply stand where I am.

Breathe.

And let everything I have lived settle deeper into the soil.

✦ THE CODEX REMEMBERS ✦

I do not need every day to feel good to know my life is good.

I do not need every challenge to contain a revelation.

I do not need to know what waits around the next bend.

Some days will hurt.

Some days will overflow with joy.

Some days I will lead beautifully.

Some days I will barely have enough capacity to make it through.

Some days I will climb the mountain.

Some days I will lie back in an inner tube and let the fucking river do the work.

But every day—I know where I stand.

The Sun reminds me what is true.

The Mountain reminds me what I have learned.

The River reminds me that I can trust movement I do not control.

And the Tree reminds me of the thing I no longer have to search for: myself.

I am not waiting for the weather to become gentle.
I am not waiting for life to become predictable.
I am not waiting for another revelation to tell me who I am.

I am my own fucking tree.

Every day.
In every weather.
My roots are mine.
My branches are mine.
My seasons are mine.

And with my own hand—

beneath the sun,

upon the mountain,

beside the river,

rooted exactly where I stand—

I write my own story.

The Universe of Jen & Purple Codex

A Living Map of My Own Becoming

There came a point in my life when a planner or a vision board wasn’t enough. I wasn’t trying to organize my life or manifest my destiny.

I was trying to understand the whole fucking universe of being me.

So I built one.

Come sit under my stars…
